Budget Adjustment: Indigent Legal Services requests $125,000 to fund a contract with a private defense attorney to replace the Salt Lake Legal Defender Association (LDA) due to a conflict of interest.

Requested Agenda Item Description: Salt Lake Legal Defender Association (LDA), County’s primary adult criminal defense services provider, was originally appointed by the court for an aggravated murder case, State v Christopher. However, the judge has found that a conflict of interest exists and has ordered that LDA withdraw, and that a conflict council be appointed. Salt Lake County is statutorily obligated to provide legal representation in these cases.
This one time request is to fund a contract with a private defense attorney to step in and replace LDA through the trial or other resolution of the case.
