Informational Presentation on Councilmember Theodore’s Letter to Governor Cox, Speaker Wilson, and President Adams on Forest Management and the Great Salt Lake

Requested Agenda Item Description: On January 13, 2023, Councilmember Theodore sent a letter to the Utah Governor, Speaker of the House, and Senate President discussing how improving forest management can increase water flow from our watersheds and may help us to address the problem of a shrinking Great Salt Lake. Prior to signature, this letter was sent to several experts around the state for their comments. They shared the letter with others, and the letter was very well received particularly in Rural Utah. When the letter was sent to the Governor, Speaker and President, a substantial list of endorsers was included. Councilmember Theodore has since met with several groups of County officials from across the state who are supportive of the concepts and information contained in the letter and the accompanying fact sheet. Many of these officials have reached out to Chair Winder Newton and others. We wanted to share the letter with the council for your information and offer you an opportunity to join us in urging the Governor and Legislative Leadership to provide resources and time to discuss these important issues during this legislative session.
