Requested Agenda Item Description: Salt Lake County Criminal Justice Initiatives submitted a funding request to the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance for $2M to support the Magna Metro Township Safety and Success project (MTSS) for three years. DOJ notified SLCo of the funding award on September 29, 2022. This budget includes funding for year one of the three year award period. Funding will permit the hiring of the MTSS Coalition Coordinator and designation of two major subawards to service providers, including Unified Police Department Choose Gang Free and a culturally-specific nonprofit organization to be determined by the MTSS Coalition.

The MTSS Coalition Coordinator will be housed in CJI and have responsibility for administering the Magna coalition and all of its regular activities to address community violence prevention strategies under the grant. The coordinator will ensure appropriate bookkeeping for the project and engage in administrative coordination with Mayor Finance. MTSS intends to impact community violence among youth and young adults by expanding and enhancing the existing community violence coalition. The target population includes at-risk youth and young adults, age 25 and under, who live in poverty in households located in Magna.

Additional funding is committed by Utah Juvenile Justice Services to support the hiring of the Salt Lake County Public Health Informatics Bureau Staff Member to fully support the staffing needs of the project.
