Designate three Wasatch Range Canyons in Salt Lake County as a Recreation Area
body
Description: State code Chapter 17.34.(5) allows counties to provide public safety services (police and fire) in any area of the county outside the limits of cities and towns that is designated as a “recreation area” through the use of general funds, so long as certain conditions are met. In the past, the County has funded public safety services provided by UPD and UFA in Millcreek Canyon and Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. This action item is for the County Council to re-authorize the three canyons as a recreation area through Resolution. This action item does not commit the County to any funding. Rather, the action solely designates a “recreation area.” It should be noted that, the passage of SB187 by the 2019 state Legislature allows that the same public safety services may be funded in cities and towns that are in the geographic region of a recreation area, so long as certain provisions are met. The soon-to be incorporated new town of Brighton is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
